Travel and Personal Development

Hans Christian Andersen once said that “to travel is to live.” We may not fully understand what this great author wanted to say, but we can always guess what he intended to say. In a sense, he might be insinuating that life itself is a travel wherein we move from one stage of life to another, and we must be always moving forward to the future. Or he might be insinuating that life without travel is not a life at all; it is stale and without any excitement and new discoveries, for to travel means to discover new places and to explore new boundaries which we haven’t seen before.

Traveling is very important for personal development. It is a powerful means of expanding our horizons and points of view. In a way, if you engage in travel, you will be able to have a personal assessment of the place from which you have originated. Likewise, it gives you a chance to examine and reexamine your culture and your way of life. Hence, travels provide you with new paradigms which prod you to reassess your old paradigms. Say for instance, if you were just reading the best travel blog online, you can already expand your consciousness. Yet, the expansion of your consciousness will be more perfect if you actually engage in actual travels.

How Travel Help Us Grow?
As I have said earlier, travel is ideal for personal development. In a way, it allows us to grow. First, it helps us gain new convictions and allow us to let go of some of our false beliefs. The process of letting go of false beliefs is very essential to the growth of a person. Francis Bacon, the famous Englishman, once said that after his travel, he was able to gain new convictions and sometimes he ended up with so much shattered convictions. This is also often the case with people who are sensitive enough to learn from their travels. They gain new convictions and lose some of their most strongly-held convictions. This happens because when we travel, we come face-to-face with a new way of life which is sometimes diametrically opposed to what we have been used to. Travel, likewise, helps us know ourselves deeper. Faced with a new paradigm, we find ourselves confronted with a new way of life which poses itself as another viable way of life. Hence, we sometimes have no choice but to reassess our viewpoints in view of this new paradigm.

Not all are privileged to travel
Not all people always get the chance to travel. In fact, there are people who never really get the chance to travel in their lifetime. We can’t blame them for their lot, because travel entails time and money. If we don’t have money, it is quite difficult to engage in travel. Yet, there are jobs permit us to have enough money and time to travel. Say for instance, I got a friend who day trade while on a travel. He is fortunate enough to have such a flexible job that affords him money and time to indulge in a travel binge.
